Maybe you have or maybe you already know the answer… Technology has made it easier for us to gain information quickly – No more library research – spending hours studying different books, and resources, or conducting interviews. Applying research methodology. It is as easy as pressing the “search” button.
But then pops up that little nasty question, the little voice in our heads, that we don’t want often to hear… “What can be construed as the truth, cold hard facts and how do we obtain them?” It’s an unpopular question. We want to believe it’s as easy, comfortable, or borderline lazy, -as pressing “the search” button, watching that quick video – but deep down we know the real answer…
A quick look at YouTube
– YouTube is an online video sharing and social media platform.
– YouTube is a website designed for sharing videos. Millions of users around the world have created accounts on the site that allow them to upload videos that anyone can watch. Every minute of every day, more than 35 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube.
– You can make money on YouTube through the following features: Advertising revenue: Get ad revenue from the display, overlay, and video ads. Channel memberships: Your members make recurring monthly payments in exchange for special perks that you offer.
– YouTube is a video-sharing service where users can watch, like, share, comment, and upload their own videos. The video service can be accessed on PCs, laptops, tablets, and via mobile phones.
When we look at these explanations the following can be summarized:
– Anyone can create an account and start uploading their own material
– Millions of people have created accounts and lots of videos are added by the minute
– It has become a video diary for a lot of people
– It has become a business for a lot of people
– People can share anything in their uploads, except illegal material of course
– There is no validation system in place to prove that content is factual
– You can make money with memberships – The more popular your channel and the more people that join and like your content – the more revenue it generates for you after a certain number of followers are reached. Every time someone sees an ad on your videos, it counts toward your account. At 10,000 views, the potential to get paid truly begins.
Again that ugly little question rears its head…
“What can be construed as the truth, cold hard facts and how do we obtain them?”
Don’t get me wrong – I also like to quickly watch a DIY or nice recipe video just like the next guy.
The concern starts when I realize two facts:
1. The platform is based on OPINIONS as well as MOTIVE.
2. Giving an opinion is great and makes it easy as it’s really the recipient’s choice if they want to accept it as fact and knowledge. There is no proof. The presenter can choose how much information he gives. Motive – the reason for “hit that share button” might be financial gain.
To better understand FACTS we once again go to the origin of truth and knowledge. Time-tested experience that is documented. Medical, law, education, military … any type of professional we deem necessary in life still studies the work of those that went before them.
Facts that are proven to be true.
In the end, it all comes down to what we believe to be Fact or Opinion.
